Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have recorded further operational successes across Zamfara State, thwarting separate terrorist abduction attempts, rescuing multiple civilians, and safely defusing a planted Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
The series of tactical interventions occurred across the Bukkuyum, Anka, and Tsafe Local Government Areas on 17 August 2026, highlighting the joint task force’s ongoing offensive against armed non-state actors in the North-West theatre.
Multi-Sector Operational Breakdown
According to an official statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer for Operation FANSAN YAMMA, security forces executed rapid responses following intelligence alerts and distress calls from affected communities.
Key details from the operational engagements include:
- Gurusu–Anka Road Rescue (Sector 2): Troops intercepted a terrorist group attempting a road abduction along the Gurusu–Anka transit axis. Following an aggressive pursuit, the assailants abandoned their captives and fled into the forest. Seven civilians—comprising four women and three children—were extracted unharmed.
- Tsafe Highway Interception: Personnel responded to reports of armed terrorists attacking motorists near Magazu Village along the main transport corridor in Tsafe LGA. Troops engaged the gunmen in a firefight, forcing them to retreat into surrounding brushwood. Several rescued motorists who sustained gunshot injuries during the initial ambush were evacuated to a medical facility for urgent care.
- IED Neutralization in Bukkuyum LGA: Sector 2 troops identified an unexploded explosive device planted by terrorists along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit established a security perimeter and successfully rendered the device safe, clearing the major supply route for civilian traffic and military patrols.
Theatre Command Reassurance
The Theatre Command emphasized that troops maintain high operational vigilance and tactical pressure across the Joint Operations Area to deny terrorist networks freedom of movement. Military authorities reiterated their call for local communities to support ongoing counter-insurgency operations by providing timely, actionable intelligence to nearby security formations.
