INEC Reaffirms 2027 Election Readiness as IRI Pre-Election Mission Visits Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared its readiness to conduct free, fair, and credible polls in 2027, as public campaigning officially opens across the country.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, during a meeting with a Pre-Election Assessment Mission from the International Republican Institute (IRI) led by former US Assistant Secretary of State Dr Jendayi Frazier, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan stated that recent off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun served as operational stress tests for the commission’s technology and field logistics.

Scaling Technology and Massive Workforce Operations

Prof. Amupitan highlighted the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal, noting that upload rates for polling unit result sheets (Form EC8A) exceeded 98 per cent in recent off-cycle contests.

To manage the scale of the 2027 general elections, the electoral umpire is preparing a massive administrative deployment across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory:

  • Ad-hoc Staff Mobilisation: INEC plans to recruit and deploy approximately 1.4 million ad-hoc personnel across more than 176,000 polling units nationwide.
  • Voter Register Cleanup: The commission is using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) during the Continuous Voter Registration exercise to eliminate duplicate records and secure the national voter roll.
  • Logistics and Accessibility: Strategic partnerships with transport unions are being expanded to ensure an 8:30 AM opening time across all voting locations, alongside dedicated accessibility measures for persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and elderly voters.

Countering Electoral Threats and Security Risks

Addressing broader environmental challenges, the INEC Chairman acknowledged that voter confidence faces persistent threats from localized violence, vote-buying, disinformation, and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI).

To safeguard the process, the commission is coordinating with law enforcement through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), as well as anti-graft agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), to monitor campaign financing and prosecute electoral offenders.

Prof. Amupitan added that presidential candidates would participate in signing the First National Peace Accord organized by the National Peace Committee later on Tuesday to commit political parties to issue-based campaigning ahead of the 2027 polls.
