Nigerian Military Command Praises Progress in Northwest Anti-Banditry Operations


GUSAU, NIGERIA – Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Assessment Team has commended troops engaged in Operation Fansan Yamma (OPFY) for their sustained efforts against terrorists and criminal elements in the country’s North-West and parts of the North-Central regions. This assessment was made during a visit to the OPFY Headquarters in Gusau, Zamfara State, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

Major General WB Idris, leader of the DHQ team, underscored the importance of continuous evaluation of joint operations to ensure they align with the military’s strategic objectives and the broader national aim of the Joint Task Force. He stated that the visit sought to assess current operational activities, reinforce collaboration among agencies, and identify ways to enhance the overall effectiveness of counterterrorism and anti-banditry efforts in the region.

Major General Idris specifically praised the professionalism and coordination of the troops, which include personnel from various security agencies involved in OPFY. He lauded their resilience and dedication, particularly given the challenging terrain and complex threats they face daily, urging them to maintain the current momentum and improve coordination among stakeholders for maximum operational efficiency.

Theatre Commander Major General Oluyinka Soyele expressed appreciation for the DHQ team’s visit, calling it a vital step towards strengthening field operations. He reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining operational effectiveness and emphasized the importance of troop morale and seamless collaboration. The assessment team also visited frontline troops in Kwotorkoshi and Tsafe in Zamfara State, encouraging them to remain focused on OPFY’s mandate. The DHQ’s visit is seen as crucial for boosting morale, validating ongoing efforts, and reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the affected regions.
