Military, journalists pledge closer ties to tackle insecurity in northern Nigeria

The Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have agreed to deepen media-military cooperation to strengthen security efforts and consolidate peace across northern Nigeria.

The commitment was reached during a working visit by Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, the newly appointed Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 1 Division, to the Kaduna State Council of the NUJ.

Colonel Abdullahi, whose command covers Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa states, highlighted the strategic role of the media in shaping public trust and communicating security operations during both conflict and peacetime.

“The importance of the media is critical in both war and peacetime,” Colonel Abdullahi said. “Now that we are in a period of relative peace, the media is essential because it consolidates the gains achieved by security forces.”

Enhancing public communication

The initiative aims to improve mutual understanding between defense officials and local reporters, ensuring the dissemination of accurate and timely information on counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations in the North-West region.

In response, the Kaduna NUJ executive welcomed the engagement, affirming that a structured dialogue between journalists and military spokespersons is vital for responsible reporting and national stability.
