Nigerian generals make historic parachute jumps in elite military exercise

Two senior Nigerian Army generals have successfully executed parachute jumps from a moving aircraft, marking a rare operational milestone for the country’s armed forces.

Major General Muhammed Inuwa, Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry, and Brigadier General MS Usman, Commandant of the Nigerian Army Airborne Training School, completed the airborne exercise on Wednesday, 21 October 2026.

Military officials described Major General Inuwa’s jump as the first ever performed by an officer of major general rank in the history of the Nigerian Army.

The exercise was conducted to demonstrate practical leadership, test airborne capabilities, and boost morale within the service’s elite tactical formations.

Leadership by example

Senior commanders taking part in combat parachute drops is a practice traditionally associated with elite airborne units globally, reminiscent of historic Allied commanders who parachuted alongside their troops during World War II.

“The exercise underscores the commitment of leadership to practical operational training and technical proficiency,” the Army said in a statement celebrating the achievement.

Defense analysts view the demonstration as part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to modernize specialized combat training and maintain tactical readiness across its infantry and airborne divisions.
