Troops from Nigeria’s joint military task force have rescued a 50-year-old farmer who was abducted following an attack on rural communities in the country’s turbulent north-western state of Zamfara.
The operation, carried out under Operation Fansan Yamma, took place in the Dutsen Maru community in Maru District on 26 October after local residents alerted security forces to an ongoing raid. Military personnel swiftly deployed to the scene, intercepting the armed assailants as they attempted to flee the area with the victim, identified as Mallam Ibrahim Suleiman.
Recovered assets and ongoing search
In addition to securing Mr. Suleiman’s release, troops recovered three motorcycles and a donkey belonging to local farmers, which had been seized during the attack.
However, defense officials stated that the mission remains active, with ground troops intensifying search-and-rescue efforts in the surrounding countryside to locate several other residents who remain unaccounted for. Northern Nigeria—particularly rural areas in Zamfara State—has been plagued for years by armed criminal groups locally known as “bandits.” These gangs frequently attack farming communities, carrying out mass abductions for ransom, cattle rustling, and killing residents.

Security in rural farming belts
The military highlighted that rapid response mechanisms and timely distress calls from local communities remain crucial in countering rural security threats and protecting agricultural livelihoods.
Agriculture is the primary economic activity in Zamfara, but recurring attacks on farming communities have disrupted local food production and displaced thousands of villagers across the region.
