The Director General of Nigeria’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has urged graduating corps members to become “worthy ambassadors” of the country and utilize their training to create jobs amid economic challenges.
The charge was contained in a farewell message to the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream I corps members, who have officially concluded their mandatory one-year national service.
In a statement signed by Caroline Embu, the NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, the scheme’s leadership praised the young graduates for their dedication, patriotism, and selfless efforts across various host communities.
“Your commitment, diligence, and patriotism have greatly contributed to our nation’s development,” the message said. “Through your selfless efforts at your Places of Primary Assignment, you have brought positive change to communities and truly embodied the spirit of nation-building.”
Harnessing skills for self-reliance
With unemployment remaining a key concern for fresh graduates in Africa’s most populous nation, the NYSC head strongly advised the departing youth to leverage the practical training they received during the service year.
Specifically, the Director General urged them to apply the skills acquired through the scheme’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.
The initiative was designed to help young graduates bypass the highly competitive job market by establishing their own enterprises.
“By doing so, you can become successful entrepreneurs and future employers,” the statement added.
A call for national unity
The NYSC was established in 1973 in the wake of the Nigerian Civil War, with the primary aim of reconciling, rebuilding, and integrating the country’s diverse ethnic groups by deploying graduates to states other than their own.
Reflecting on this foundational mission, the farewell message urged the departing youth to maintain their faith in a united Nigeria.
“Remain steadfast in your belief in one Nigeria,” the statement read. “Remember, building a better nation requires the dedication and contribution of every citizen. Let us, therefore, continue to work together in unity, hope, and determination for a brighter future for our country.”
