Abuja, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that more than 1.3 million Nigerians have pre-registered to vote online in just one week. The figure of 1,379,342 was recorded between the start of the online process on Monday, 18th August, and Sunday, 24th August, 2025.

The Commission, through a statement signed by its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, has also confirmed that in-person registration has now commenced at 811 State and Local Government offices across the country. This will allow those who prefer the physical option to register directly, as well as enable those who pre-registered online to complete their process.

A detailed breakdown of the initial registrations shows that women outnumber men, making up 52.04% of new voters. Young people, aged between 18 and 34, account for the majority of the new registrants at 62.37%. Students form the largest single occupational group, representing 27.15% of the total.

INEC has urged all eligible citizens who are not yet registered to participate in the year-long exercise, which will run until 30th August, 2026. However, it cautioned against leaving registration until the last minute and warned that double or multiple registration is a violation of the law. The commission stated that transfers of voter registration and the replacement of lost or damaged cards are permitted.
