Nigerian Election Commission Extends Voter Registration in Anambra, Updates on New Parties

ABUJA, NIGERIA – Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State by three days, now set to conclude on Sunday, July 20, 2025. The decision follows a review of the exercise and appeals from citizens, as the state prepares for its upcoming off-cycle governorship election.

As of Wednesday, July 16, 2025, INEC reported that 96,085 new voters had successfully registered in Anambra State over nine days, averaging over 10,600 registrations daily. Additionally, 12,595 voters applied for transfers, and 7,061 sought updates to their records or replacement of lost Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). In a statement, Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information & Voter Education Committee, confirmed the extension and provided these figures. Preliminary data indicates that 58% of the new registrants are female, while 52.48% are young people aged between 18 and 34.

Following the extended registration period, INEC plans to display the voter register for public claims and objections, followed by a data clean-up using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). Detailed breakdowns of new registrants by age, gender, occupation, and disability will subsequently be published.

In a separate development, INEC also announced that it has received five more letters of intent from associations seeking registration as new political parties, bringing the total number of such applications to 134. Details of these new associations, including their proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership, have been made public.
