Tinubu Names Campaign Council Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Election

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has formally constituted the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the January 2027 general elections.

The appointments were announced on Saturday, 22 August 2026, in a presidential statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. The announcement officially structures the ruling party’s electoral machinery following the formal start of campaign activities nationwide.

Key Campaign Leadership Positions

The campaign structure places the country’s top political figures at its helm while drawing on seasoned political strategists:

  • Council Leadership: President Bola Tinubu serves as Chairman, with Vice President Kashim Shettima named Vice-Chairman I and APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda as Vice-Chairman II.
  • Executive Management: Former Zamfara State Governor Senator Abdulaziz Yari has been appointed Director-General of the council, with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma serving as Secretary.
  • Regional & Administrative Directors: Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni will serve as Deputy Directors-General overseeing the Southern and Northern zones. Presidential Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila will oversee campaign administration.
  • Media & Communications: Minister of Information Mohammed Idris coordinates the media and strategic communication directorate alongside Dele Alake, Bayo Onanuga, and Lanre Issa-Onilu. Alake will also lead a five-member spokesperson team.

Economic Track Record at the Center of Campaign

In his charge to council members, President Tinubu urged the party leadership to mobilize nationwide around his administration’s policy outcomes and economic reform trajectory.

“We have delivered on our campaign promises and set our country on a path of economic progress,” Tinubu stated, calling on the campaign team to showcase the administration’s record as public campaigns ramp up ahead of the 16 January 2027 presidential and parliamentary votes.
