Nigerian President Tinubu to Address Parliament on Democracy Day

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives on Thursday, June 12, at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

The address coincides with Nigeria’s annual Democracy Day, observed on June 12. This date commemorates the presidential election held on June 12, 1993, widely regarded as one of the most credible polls in Nigeria’s post-independence history. The election was won by the late Moshood Abiola but was subsequently annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

The event, which was formally announced to lawmakers via an internal memorandum, will begin at 11:00 AM local time, with President Tinubu expected to arrive at noon to deliver his address. The theme for this year’s celebration is “26 years of democracy: Renewing our commitment to national development.”

A spokesman for the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi, stated on Sunday that the programme will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of National Honours on selected legislators by the President.

The joint sitting is described as a “significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” underscoring the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values and advancing national development over 26 years of uninterrupted civilian rule. The House of Representatives urged all Nigerians to embrace the spirit of Democracy Day as a time for “reflection, renewed patriotism, and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.”
