Bilbao, Spain – Tottenham Hotspur has clinched its first major European trophy since 1984, securing the UEFA Europa League title with a narrow 1-0 victory over Manchester United. The final, held at San Mamés Stadium on Wednesday night, was decided by an own goal in a tense encounter.
The decisive moment came in the 42nd minute when a cross from Spurs’ Pape Matar Sarr was inadvertently deflected into the net by Manchester United defender Luke Shaw. While credited as an own goal, Brennan Johnson was recognised for his involvement in the play.
The match itself was characterised by limited attacking opportunities and high tension from both sides. Manchester United dominated possession for much of the game but struggled to translate it into clear-cut chances. Their closest attempts at an equaliser included a header from Rasmus Hojlund that was acrobatically cleared off the line by Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven, and a crucial 97th-minute save by goalkeeper Vicario from another Luke Shaw header.
Despite the lack of free-flowing football, the significance of the match was palpable for both clubs. Tottenham was desperate to end a 17-year trophy drought, while Manchester United aimed for a third consecutive season with a major piece of silverware.
The victory not only delivers Tottenham Hotspur their long-awaited trophy but also secures their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
