Nigerian long jumper Ruth Usoro has won a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, clearing a season’s best distance of 6.87 metres.
The 28-year-old athlete set the mark on her opening attempt, holding the lead for a significant portion of the final before finishing second behind England’s Jazmin Sawyers, who defended her title with a winning jump of 6.93m. Australia’s Brooke Buschkuehl secured bronze with 6.80m.
The podium finish marks a clear step forward for Usoro, who placed sixth at the previous Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Usoro’s rise in international athletics
- Collegiate Success: A former Texas Tech University athlete, Usoro became one of the most decorated competitors in NCAA history, winning multiple titles across both the long jump and triple jump.
- Olympic History: In 2021, she became the first Nigerian athlete to qualify for both long jump and triple jump events at a single Olympic Games.
- Major Championship Record: Usoro made history alongside teammate Ese Brume in 2022 when the pair became the first Nigerian duo to reach a World Athletics Championships long jump final. She was also a long jump finalist at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and holds the African Games triple jump title.
Usoro’s performance in Glasgow adds another major international medal to her record as she continues to establish herself among Africa’s premier field athletes.
