Nigeria: Supreme Court Removes Labour Party Chairman

Nigeria’s Supreme Court has ruled to remove Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.

In a unanimous decision by a five-member panel on Friday, the apex court overturned a previous ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had recognised Mr Abure as the party’s leader.

The Supreme Court stated that the Court of Appeal did not have the legal authority to make such a declaration, as the case primarily concerned the internal leadership of the Labour Party.

The Supreme Court (highest court) emphasised that disputes regarding party leadership are internal matters over which the judiciary typically does not have jurisdiction.

The Supreme Court allowed an appeal filed by Senator Esther Usman and another individual, deeming it to have merit. The court also noted that Mr Abure’s term in office had already expired. Consequently, a cross-appeal filed by the faction of the Labour Party loyal to Mr Abure was dismissed.

Further details on the implications of this ruling are expected to follow.

This decision marks a significant development for the Labour Party in Nigeria, potentially leading to a change in its national leadership.
