Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has banned the charging of privately owned electric motorcycles and other electric vehicles across its campuses, citing the rising cost of electricity.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, the institution said the practice of using university power supply to charge personal electric vehicles was placing an unsustainable financial burden on the school.
The university administration noted that the ban takes immediate effect as part of broader measures to manage institutional resources prudently.
Monitoring and disciplinary measures
The university directed all staff, students, commercial motorcycle operators, and visitors to cease charging private electric vehicles on campus premises immediately.
To enforce compliance, the management has tasked key academic and administrative heads with monitoring their respective units:
- Provosts, deans, directors, and heads of department are required to report any violations within their areas.
- A university monitoring team will conduct regular patrols across all campuses to ensure strict adherence to the directive.
The statement warned that anyone caught violating the ban will face disciplinary action in accordance with the university’s rules and regulations.
