ABUJA — Power supply has been fully restored to several districts in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, following the repair of a major transformer fault at the Kukwaba transmission substation, officials say.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that engineers successfully rectified the issue on the 60MVA transformer at 16:14 local time on Tuesday, October 20.
The facility had tripped offline at approximately 20:37 on Monday, October 19, cutting off bulk electricity supply to local distribution networks and leaving thousands of residents without power. The fix allows the local distributor, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), to resume normal supply to several major residential and commercial hubs, including Durumi, Sunnyvale, Pyakasa, Trademore, and areas surrounding Human Rights Radio.
In a statement, TCN management apologized to affected customers for the inconvenience caused during the nearly 20-hour outage.
Power grid instability and equipment breakdowns remain a frequent challenge across Nigeria, where the state-owned transmission company regularly works to repair aging infrastructure and restore supply to local distribution networks.
