Nigerian Army arrests notorious crime suspect following community tip-off

Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected gang leader accused of orchestrating years of violence, extortion, and kidnappings across communities in Benue State.

Denen Joe, known locally as “DJ Abam,” was apprehended in the Peva area following intelligence provided by residents.

Authorities allege that Mr. Joe headed a criminal syndicate responsible for illegal taxation, cattle rustling, land seizures, and multiple armed attacks on civilians and security forces.

Community members had long accused the suspect of operating an illegal administration in the area, enforcing unlawful detentions, and levying arbitrary fines on local businesses and farmers.

Serious allegations under investigation

Among the allegations linked to the suspect is involvement in the murder of traditional clan leader Zaki Sylvester Peter Suleagbough, who was targeted after publicly speaking out against local criminal groups.

Mr. Joe is also accused of taking part in a September 2025 ambush on military special forces personnel that left several soldiers dead.

The military noted that while the arrest marks a significant breakthrough for community security in the region, all allegations against the suspect remain under formal investigation pending legal proceedings.

Humanitarian and security observers view the operation as part of ongoing efforts by Nigerian security forces to dismantle armed networks operating along the borders of Benue and Taraba states.
