The Nigerian government has released eight months of backdated payments for the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) to staff across federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa announced on Wednesday that full payments covering January to August 2026 have been disbursed to tertiary institutions.
CATA is a financial allowance designed to assist academic staff in purchasing teaching, research, and learning materials.
Dr. Alausa noted that the disbursement fulfills commitments made under the 2025 agreement between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
“All these institutions should have received notification to start paying CATA to all academic staff,” Dr. Alausa said, adding that similar allowances for non-academic staff are currently being processed and are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
The minister credited President Bola Tinubu’s administration with prioritizing staff welfare and investing heavily in infrastructure across basic, tertiary, and postgraduate education.
