2027: TDF praises President Tinubu’s plan to focus on governance over campaigning

The Democratic Front (TDF), has praised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to limit his campaign appearances ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, describing the move as “novel” and “exemplary.”

The group’s endorsement follows criticism from opposition figures, notably former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who accused the president of avoiding direct engagement with voters. The political debate stems from President Tinubu’s recent announcement that he will restrict his physical presence at reelection campaign rallies to ensure state duties and economic governance are not neglected.

Nigeria First

In a joint statement, TDF Chairman Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary Chief Wale Adedayo argued that President Tinubu’s strategy puts national interests ahead of political ambitions. They said the decision reflected a commitment to the administration’s “Nigeria First” policy—approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2025—and demonstrated a determination to protect ongoing economic reforms. “The pertinence of the President’s decision to prioritise governance over personal political interest is remarkable proof of his readiness to walk the talk,” the statement read. The group strongly condemned opposition critiques, calling it “unpatriotic” to attack a president for choosing state obligations over political campaign rallies. “Only a leader who is genuinely concerned about the welfare and well-being of his people will make the kind of sacrifice that the President has made,” TDF added, asserting that the move sets a positive precedent for Nigeria’s political culture.

Rebuttal over policy Record

The TDF expressed confidence that President Tinubu’s record in office would speak for itself, eliminating the need for exhaustive nationwide campaigning. Highlighting key administrative developments, the group pointed to:Economic & Financial Reforms: Efforts to stabilize the economy and boost public revenue.

Education & Healthcare: The introduction of tertiary student loans (NELFUND) alongside domestic healthcare investments targeting complex conditions like kidney disease and cancer.

Security & Agriculture: Targeted security operations and agricultural funding intended to address food inflation.

The group added that President Tinubu has assembled a “formidable presidential campaign team” capable of taking the administration’s message to voters across Nigeria without requiring the president’s constant physical presence.
