Peter Onwubuariri, an assistant director of Media at the Presidential Villa, has died in Kano following a prolonged illness. He was 48.
According to his wife, Catherine Ezinna Onwubuariri, the veteran journalist passed away on Monday after receiving treatment for about a month at the Kano Cancer Hospital.
On Tuesday, his remains were formally released from the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital to Presidential Villa officials before being moved to Owerri, Imo State, for burial.
A staff member and assistant editor-in-Chief at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mr. Onwubuariri, was posted to the Presidential Villa in 2014. During his tenure, he served in the media teams of three successive administrations: Presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari, and Bola Tinubu.
President Tinubu expressed sadness over his death, describing it as a painful loss to the Presidency, NAN, and the Nigerian media community.
“Peter was a dedicated journalist and a committed public servant whose professionalism and calm disposition earned him the respect of his colleagues,” President Tinubu said in a statement issued by his media advisor, Bayo Onanuga.
A former North American correspondent for NAN, Mr. Onwubuariri covered major national and international beats, including foreign affairs, telecommunications, and finance.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
