Nigeria’s electoral management body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has concluded a two-day strategic training workshop for top regional administrators in Lagos as it gears up for the country’s next general election in 2027.
The meeting gathered Administrative Secretaries from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, alongside international development partners, including the European Union (EU), DAI, and DGM.Led by Commission Secretary Dr. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the sessions focused on improving state-level coordination, staff management, and election logistics. The workshop came under the direction of INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN.
Delegates adopted a 16-point action plan designed to address operational challenges experienced in previous voting cycles. Key recommendations include:
Technology Readiness: Conducting early mock accreditation tests, system audits, and establishing contingency plans for power and internet connectivity in rural districts.
Logistics & Security: Identifying high-risk security zones early, improving transport networks, and establishing better reverse-logistics procedures for election materials.
Ad-Hoc Personnel Management: Building a verified database of trained, vetted temporary election workers with end-to-end performance tracking.
Role Clarity: Delineating exact responsibilities between Resident Electoral Commissioners and administrative leads to streamline operations.Presenting the final communique,
Dr. Eze Uchechukwu-John noted that the recommendations provide a clear roadmap to strengthen administrative capacity before nationwide campaigning begins.
Delivering closing remarks on behalf of the regional officials, Lagos State Administrative Secretary Oluyemi Showunmi reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the new guidelines across state offices ahead of the 2027 polls.
