The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has withdrawn its 14-day ultimatum issued to the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), citing sustained military operations against bandits in Sokoto State.
The Islamic rights organization had, on 22 August 2026, demanded swift military intervention to secure the state or called for the minister’s resignation.
However, in a statement released on Saturday, MURIC Founder and Executive Director Professor Ishaq Akintola confirmed the decision to retract the threat ahead of its scheduled 7 September deadline.
Mr. Akintola highlighted successful clearance operations conducted on 26 and 28 August by troops in Maikujera, within the Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Ground forces deployed heavy equipment, including armored personnel carriers, to dislodge armed groups, resulting in multiple bandit casualties while others fled into surrounding bushland.
Quoting Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, spokesperson for the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, who described the exercise as hugely successful, MURIC commended the military leadership for its rapid response.
While lifting the ultimatum, the group urged security forces to maintain momentum until armed groups are eliminated from the region, underscoring the spiritual and historical importance of Sokoto to the Muslim community.
