INEC cleans register of 103 million voters ahead of 2027 polls

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received more than 4,800 claims and 600 objections following the public display of its preliminary voter register, commission chief Joash Amupitan revealed on Friday.

Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with an ECOWAS pre-election fact-finding delegation, Prof. Amupitan confirmed that the voter database currently stands at over 103 million citizens. He assured the regional delegation that all discrepancies, minor corrections, and ward-level objections would be resolved before the final register is certified on 15 December 2026.

To test system reliability and result transmission protocols ahead of the 2027 general election, INEC plans to conduct a nationwide mock accreditation exercise in November.

Prof. Amupitan noted that technical safeguards have been introduced to authenticate polling unit results locally before transmitting them to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

“The Independent National Electoral Commission under my watch has no candidate and no political party,” Prof. Amupitan told the ECOWAS delegation, which was led by former Sierra Leonean Vice-President Victor Bockarie Foh and former Speaker Abbas Chernor Bundu.

The electoral body also confirmed key administrative developments across its operations:

  • Candidate Petition Reviews: Following a review of the final lists published for the 2027 elections, INEC upheld 41 out of 69 governorship petitions and 25 out of 61 State House of Assembly petitions. The decisions addressed party omissions, membership register discrepancies, and illegal multiple nominations.
  • Security & Field Adjustments: Recent assessment tours across the South-West, North-West, South-East, and North-East have prompted higher security and logistical deployments in difficult terrains. Post-election violence monitoring strategies successfully deployed during recent off-cycle state elections will also be expanded.
  • Staff Welfare & Inclusion: The commission has secured approval for the Consolidated Election Management Body Salary Structure (CEMBSS) to deter political inducement among staff, while finalizing tailored voting frameworks for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
  • Cooperative Conference: Separately on Friday, presidents of the INEC Staff Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society convened in Jos, Plateau State, for their 2026 Annual General Meeting focused on long-term financial sustainability for commission personnel.
