China Pledges Sustained Support for Nigeria’s Poverty Reduction Efforts

The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s poverty alleviation efforts by sharing lessons from China’s targeted development strategy.

The ambassador’s position was delivered in Abuja by Sun Xuekun, Counselor of the Embassy’s Economic and Commercial Office, during a strategic workshop hosted by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN).

Key Lessons from China’s Economic Transformation

Highlighting China’s journey from a low-income nation to a major contributor to global development, the envoy outlined the core drivers behind the eradication of absolute poverty within its borders:

  • Unprecedented Global Scale: Since launching reform and opening-up policies in 1978, China has lifted over 800 million people out of poverty, accounting for more than 70 percent of global poverty reduction and achieving the UN 2030 Agenda targets ten years ahead of schedule.
  • Targeted Interventions: The final push between 2012 and 2020 lifted 98.99 million rural residents out of extreme poverty through precise household-level assessments, industrial development, relocation programs, and expanded social protections.
  • Resource and Personnel Mobilization: Beijing invested nearly 1.6 trillion yuan in targeted funds and deployed over three million public officials and work teams directly to rural villages to coordinate relief efforts.
  • Infrastructure and Sustainability: Massive investments in rural roads, clean water, power grids, telecommunications, and healthcare addressed root causes, while a five-year transition period was established to prevent vulnerable populations from slipping back into poverty.

With Nigeria actively pursuing structural economic reforms, China’s experience underscores how strong political will, massive infrastructure investment, and precise data tracking can turn the tide against systemic poverty.
