British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been discharged from a hospital in Lagos, days after a car accident that claimed the lives of two close friends.
The former world champion was deemed fit to continue his recovery at home, according to a joint statement from the Ogun and Lagos state governments. The 36-year-old was described as being “heavy-hearted” as he mourns the loss of his long-time associates.
The accident occurred on Monday on a major expressway in Ogun State when the Lexus SUV in which Joshua was a passenger collided with a stationary lorry.
Tributes to ‘loyal’ team members
The two men who died in the crash have been identified as Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, both key members of Joshua’s inner circle. Mr Ghami had served as Joshua’s full-time sport and exercise rehabilitation coach for over a decade.
After being discharged on Wednesday, Joshua visited the funeral home where the bodies of his friends are being prepared for repatriation to the UK.
Promoter Eddie Hearn, who has worked with Joshua since his professional debut, paid tribute on Instagram, saying: “Your energy and loyalty among so many other great qualities will be deeply missed. Praying for strength… for all their family, friends and of course AJ.”
Investigation points to tyre failure
While local police stated that their investigation remains “discreet” and ongoing, the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun State has released preliminary findings.
Officials say the vehicle appears to have burst a tyre before losing control and crashing into the parked truck.
The boxing world has rallied around Joshua, with messages of condolence shared by rivals and former champions including Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury, and Tony Bellew.
Roots and recovery
Joshua, who was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, had been on holiday in the country following his victory over American Jake Paul in Miami on 19 December. He frequently visits the region, particularly his ancestral home in Sagamu, to celebrate the festive period.
Medical officials say that while his physical injuries are healing, he will require time to process the “tragic losses in horrific circumstances.”
