The Kogi State Government in Nigeria has activated a coordinated, multi-agency security operation aimed at safeguarding worship centres, schools, and vulnerable public places across the state.
The directive was issued by Governor Ahmed Ododo following a series of recent attacks on worshippers and educational institutions in neighbouring Nigerian states.
Joint Teams Deployed
The launch of the operation was confirmed by the Chairman of the Lokoja Local Government Area, Abdullahi Adamu, after he held a meeting with heads of security agencies to review the situation in the state capital.
According to the Lokoja Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, ACP Abubakar Umar, five joint security teams have been established to execute the operation:
- Personnel: Teams are drawn from the Nigeria Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilante groups.
- Focus Areas: The teams will patrol remote areas with a particular focus on protecting churches, mosques, and schools.
- Preventative Measures: The operation will also involve discouraging large night gatherings in areas identified as vulnerable.
Call for Community Cooperation
Patrols and location mapping are scheduled to begin immediately, followed by community sensitisation efforts.
ACP Umar called for the cooperation of residents and religious bodies, stressing that the operation is entirely preventative, aiming to deter avoidable attacks and sustain the existing peace across the state.
