Atlético Madrid stunned city rivals Real Madrid by scoring five goals in a pulsating derby victory—a feat they have not achieved against Los Blancos in nearly 75 years.
The 5-2 triumph at the Metropolitano Stadium inflicted the first loss of the season on Real Madrid, who had previously won all six of their opening La Liga matches.
The last time Atlético scored at least five goals in a Madrid derby was in a 6-3 win back in November 1950, underscoring the significance of Diego Simeone’s side’s performance.
A Back-and-Forth Battle
The match, which produced the joint-worst defensive result for Real in La Liga since a 5-1 defeat to Barcelona in 2018, was a game of dramatic swings.
Atlético initially took the lead through Robin le Normand’s header. However, Real Madrid appeared to have taken control when they hit back with two superb strikes from Kylian Mbappé and Arda Güler, turning the scoreline on its head.
But parity was restored deep into first-half stoppage time when Alexander Sørloth found the net to make it 2-2 at the break.
Hosts Take Control
The hosts surged ahead after the restart, dominating a blistering period of the game. Julián Álvarez, who had struck the post earlier in the first half, converted from the penalty spot before curling home a brilliant free-kick to give Atlético a commanding 4-2 lead.
Despite Real’s efforts to press, the home side held firm until Antoine Griezmann sealed the historic scoreline with their fifth goal in stoppage time.
The comprehensive result maintains an impressive La Liga run for Diego Simeone’s men, who are now unbeaten in their past six league encounters against their cross-city rivals.
