Power blackouts hit Keffi, Akwanga after transmission towers collapse

Parts of Nasarawa State in central Nigeria are facing widespread power outages following the collapse of three major transmission towers during heavy rain and strong winds.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that three consecutive towers—designated T78, T79, and T80—along the critical Karu-Keffi-Akwanga 132kV transmission line collapsed on Wednesday afternoon. The incident triggered automated safety systems, causing the line to trip on overcurrent relay protection at approximately 16:06 local time (15:06 GMT) on 7 October. TCN engineers subsequently isolated the affected section to prevent further electrical damage or safety hazards.

As a result of the collapse, all outgoing 33kV distribution feeders connected to both the Keffi and Akwanga sub-stations are completely out of service. Regional electricity distribution networks are currently unable to receive power allocation through these hubs, leaving residential and commercial customers in the surrounding districts without electricity supply.

TCN stated that emergency engineering crews have been deployed to the site to inspect the structural damage and coordinate recovery efforts. The company noted that a full assessment is required before concrete timelines and resource requirements for rebuilding the line can be established.”We regret the inconvenience this development will cause electricity customers,” the transmission utility said in a statement, assuring the public that work is underway to complete repairs and restore bulk power as quickly as possible.

Grid infrastructure in the region remains vulnerable to extreme weather events during the local rainy season. TCN indicated it would provide regular progress updates as site assessments and repair operations continue.
