The British High Commission in Nigeria has praised maritime services firm Lloyd’s Register for its ongoing partnership with the UK government’s Chevening Scholarship Programme, aimed at nurturing future Nigerian leaders.
The joint initiative provides fully funded master’s degree scholarships at UK universities for outstanding Nigerian professionals pursuing maritime-related fields.
Lloyd’s Register, a global provider of engineering, technology, and professional services for the maritime sector, co-sponsors the awards for candidates from Nigeria and other African nations whose academic focus aligns with the industry.
Speaking on the impact of the collaboration, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, highlighted the strategic importance of the maritime industry to Nigeria’s economy.
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with Lloyd’s Register to support outstanding Nigerians with the potential to lead and drive positive change in the maritime sector,” Mr Baxter said. “Together, we are investing in future leaders who will strengthen innovation, sustainability, and growth across the industry.”
He added that the initiative helps equip emerging leaders with the skills and professional networks required to shape the sector’s future and boost trade.
Goz Gwam, Business Director for Africa at Lloyd’s Register, noted that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to national development and regional growth.
“We are proud of our partnership with Chevening, which helps us connect with talented individuals whose aspirations support key areas of national development,” Mr Gwam said. “Together, we are committed to developing the next generation of maritime leaders who will drive Nigeria’s and Africa’s growth as well as further strengthen UK–Nigeria relations.”
