Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled a major late-night insurgent assault on Kukawa town in Borno State, killing at least 26 terrorists and destroying ten operational motorcycles in a joint air and ground engagement.
The clash began at approximately 22:50 hrs on 28 August 2026, when fighters launched a coordinated attack against frontline positions held by the 101 Special Forces Battalion. Ground troops responded with heavy direct and indirect fire, repelling the initial assault and forcing the insurgents to retreat towards the Cross Kauwa axis.
As the fleeing fighters attempted to escape on motorcycles, the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI was scrambled to interdict their movement. Despite challenging weather conditions, military aircraft targeted insurgents attempting to seek cover beneath tree canopies, killing an estimated ten fighters.
Surveillance assets from the Multinational Joint Task Force tracked additional retreating columns heading toward the Tunbuns and Kangarwa areas. A follow-up precision airstrike destroyed ten motorcycles and neutralised 15 more terrorists, while ground troops conducting mop-up operations killed another insurgent, seized two motorcycles, and recovered stockpiles of ammunition.
Four soldiers sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the engagement and were evacuated by air for medical treatment. Frontline units have since been resupplied with combat enablers by air as security forces consolidate control and maintain dominance patrols across the Kukawa sector.
