Two fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have surrendered to Nigerian military forces in Borno State following a deadly falling-out with their own patrol units.
The fighters turned themselves in to troops of Sector 3 under Operation Hadin Kai in the town of Monguno on Monday evening, handing over two AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and communication equipment.
Military authorities disclosed that the duo was part of a larger group of 10 insurgents who had deserted an ISWAP camp at Arinna Chiki with the intention of surrendering.
However, the group was intercepted en route by an ISWAP patrol unit, triggering a gunfight.
Captain Mohammed Goni, acting military information officer for the joint task force, said troops were currently searching the area to track down the remaining eight fighters whose whereabouts remain unknown.
The two surrendered insurgents and their weapons are being held at Sector 3 headquarters in Monguno for preliminary investigation.
The military command urged remaining insurgents in the North East to lay down their arms, maintaining that sustained counter-insurgency pressure was continuing to erode the group’s operational capabilities in the region.
