Mercy Eke, the winner of Big Brother Naija season four, has revealed that she regrets participating in the reality television show despite the fame and financial benefits it brought her.
Speaking during an interview on the digital talk show Toke Moments, published on Saturday, the media personality disclosed that the relentless public scrutiny following her 2019 victory has stripped away her peace of mind.
Ms Eke, who also returned for the show’s All Stars edition, explained that the constant pressure and comparison to others have taken a severe toll on her mental well-being.
“I regret going to Big Brother, even though I love the benefits that come from it,” she said. “I wish I didn’t go… I’m not doing anything, and I can’t even sleep at night.”
‘Hungrier’ rivals and the All Stars return
Reflecting on her decision to return for the All Stars edition, Ms Eke admitted she was motivated by the prize money but found the environment entirely different from her first experience.
She noted that the intense desperation of her fellow housemates caught her off guard.
“I felt like all of us, we have money already, but a lot of people were acting like they didn’t have money before. They were more hungry than me,” she said, confirming she would never participate in the reality show again.
Clearing the rumours
Since leaving the Big Brother house, Ms Eke has focused on her personal growth, recently completing a master’s degree in the United Kingdom. She stated that the academic experience taught her vital financial literacy, including how to manage balance sheets and track business expenses.
The reality star also used the interview to address persistent internet rumours regarding her lifestyle:
- Finances: She strongly denied claims that her lifestyle is funded by wealthy benefactors.
- Relationships: She clarified that she has been in a committed relationship for four years with a partner who is single, debunking allegations that she is involved with a married man.
Driven by the examples of other successful Nigerian women, Ms Eke stressed that she prefers to focus on setting independent goals, adding: “I work hard, I challenge myself… and just keep moving, getting things done.”
