A British citizen has been charged with three counts of murder following his arrest in South Africa over the deaths of his wife and two young daughters in Bedfordshire.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised the charges against 42-year-old Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma shortly after he was detained by police in Johannesburg on Friday.
The bodies of his wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, 42, and their daughters, Natalie, 15, and Nala, five, were discovered on Monday at their home in Great Denham, near Bedford. Police had forced entry into the property on Carnoustie Drive following concerns that the family had not been seen for several days.
CCTV footage later emerged showing Mr Tshuma, who is of Zimbabwean heritage, at a UK airport fleeing the country using his British passport.
He was eventually traced to the Kensington suburb of Johannesburg and arrested in a coordinated raid by South African police and Interpol tracking units.
South Africa’s Acting National Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, praised the operation, warning that the country is “not a safe haven for fugitives.” Mr. Tshuma is expected to appear in a South African court on Monday as formal extradition proceedings begin.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Emma Davies said the decision to charge followed a swift review of evidence submitted by Bedfordshire Police, adding that “our thoughts remain with the loved ones of Zandile, Natalie, and Nala.”
Detective Inspector Lee Martin described the investigation as a “fast-moving international operation” involving British police, the National Crime Agency, Interpol, and authorities in both South Africa and Zimbabwe.
In a statement released through the police, the victims’ family thanked the public for their support, saying: “Your kindness and compassion have brought great strength to our family during this time of unimaginable loss.”
