The newly appointed British High Commissioner Designate to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has arrived in the capital, Abuja, to formally assume leadership of the UK diplomatic mission.
Mr. Vowles succeeds Dr Richard Montgomery as the top UK diplomat in Africa’s most populous nation.
“I am hugely excited to be in Nigeria,” Mr. Vowles said upon his arrival on Monday. “My first priority is to listen and learn—to travel, meet people, and immerse myself in this extraordinary country, its culture, and its energy.”
He highlighted the deep historical and bilateral connections between the two countries, adding that he looks forward to working with Nigerian partners to build on existing diplomatic and economic ties.
A seasoned diplomat, Mr. Vowles brings extensive international experience across Africa and Asia to the Abuja posting. He previously served as the UK Ambassador to Zimbabwe and Ambassador to Myanmar, along with senior diplomatic and development assignments in Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, and Bangladesh.
