Zamfara residents cheer troops after major anti-bandit operation

Residents in north-western Nigeria have openly applauded troops after a major military operation led to the reported elimination of more than 100 terrorists.

Crowds gathered in Gummi town, Zamfara State, on Thursday as military personnel offloaded eight motorcycles recovered from armed gangs during a recent successful counter-ambush.

The seized vehicles, which were being transported on an armoured personnel carrier (APC), were on their way to the regional headquarters of the North West Joint Task Force, known as Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

Eyewitnesses said large numbers of locals cheered and thanked the passing soldiers, praising their resilience in confronting the armed groups that have long plagued the region.

The spontaneous show of support is being seen as a sign of growing public confidence in the military’s intensified campaign against banditry and terrorism in Zamfara State.

Local officials say the recovery of the motorcycles is a practical blow to the mobility of the criminal networks, as such vehicles are heavily relied upon by the gangs to launch rapid raids on rural communities.
