Newcastle upon Tyne, England – Rio Ngumoha, a 16-year-old forward, became Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer as he struck in the final moments to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
The Premier League champions looked to be heading for a comfortable win when they went two goals up and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon was sent off in first-half stoppage time for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk. The decision was confirmed by a VAR check.
Liverpool had taken the lead 10 minutes before the break when Ryan Gravenberch’s low shot, aided by a deflection off Fabian Schar, beat goalkeeper Nick Pope. The Reds doubled their advantage just 30 seconds into the second half when Hugo Ekitike, a striker who had been linked with a move to Newcastle, scored with a precise right-foot finish.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Newcastle mounted a spirited comeback. Captain Bruno Guimaraes pulled one back with a diving header in the 57th minute. The hosts then stunned Liverpool with an equaliser just two minutes from time, as substitute Will Osula bundled in a goal ahead of Gravenberch.
With the match seemingly destined for a draw, Ngumoha, at 16 years and 361 days old, was left unmarked and fired home in the tenth of 11 added minutes to snatch victory. The goal also made him the fourth-youngest scorer in Premier League history, placing him behind James Vaughan, James Milner, and Wayne Rooney.
