The election, which took place in Geneva against the backdrop of the ongoing ITU Conference, is being hailed as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s ambition in global digital transformation and inclusive innovation.

The ITU, established in 1865, is the oldest specialised United Nations agency responsible for information and communications technologies (ICTs). It carries a global mandate to connect the world through innovative, inclusive, and sustainable digital solutions, facilitating connectivity in communication networks worldwide.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Tijani expressed delight, affirming Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to supporting the ITU’s collective mission. He outlined key priorities, including the provision of “resilient and sustainable digital infrastructures” and ensuring “timely access by all communities, especially the underserved, to meaningful connectivity.” He added that the world is at a defining moment, characterised by the rapid pace of technological change and profound structural shifts in societies.

The minister underscored the transformative power of digital technology, stating that it allows societies to be “more introspective, inclusive and informed as we shape the future.” With this new leadership position, Nigeria is poised to enhance its capacity to shape the future of digital development across the African continent and beyond. Dr. Tijani congratulated Ms. Cristiana Flutur of Romania, the ITU Chair, pledging close collaboration to achieve shared goals and calling for the ITU to become “a beacon of inclusive innovation and trusted collaboration for today and future generations.”
