Los Angeles, USA – Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles following clashes between residents and federal agents carrying out raids on undocumented migrants.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that the National Guard force has not yet arrived in the city, though a federal official indicated that troops are expected within 24 hours. California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the move by Trump as “purposefully inflammatory” and warned that it “will only escalate tensions.”
The deployment comes after repeated confrontations between residents and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) federal agents in a predominantly Latino district of Los Angeles.
In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump stated: “These Radical Left protests, by instigators and often paid troublemakers, will NOT BE TOLERATED.” Earlier, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had warned that active-duty Marines would be mobilised in Los Angeles “if violence continues,” having previously announced on X that his department was deploying the National Guard “IMMEDIATELY.”
Protests continued into the early hours of Sunday morning in the city. It remains unclear whether Secretary Hegseth will proceed with his threat to deploy Marines if violence persists. California Governor Gavin Newsom, in a post on X, described Hegseth’s threat as “deranged behaviour.”
