South Africa’s suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya, has resigned from his post amid mounting corruption allegations and serious criminal charges involving alleged sexual offenses.
Sibiya’s legal team submitted his resignation letter on Monday, October 12, 2026, moments before an internal disciplinary hearing against him was scheduled to commence.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that despite his resignation, his departure will be categorized as a dishonourable discharge due to the ongoing nature of the disciplinary proceedings.
Sibiya is currently in police custody following his arrest last month on charges of rape and the grooming of a minor. He maintains his innocence regarding all charges, with his formal bail hearing scheduled to resume on October 13.
In addition to the criminal charges, the former deputy police chief remains a central figure in a high-level judicial commission investigating systemic corruption, extortion, and links to organized crime networks within the South African police force.
During previous testimony before the panel, Sibiya strongly denied allegations that he had accepted substantial cash payments and luxury gifts from figures linked to criminal syndicates.
Sibiya had been on suspension since September 2025. His abrupt resignation marks a major turn in the ongoing judicial and institutional probe into top-level police misconduct in South Africa.
