Dublin, Ireland – The Republic of Ireland has deported 35 Nigerian nationals, including five children, on a chartered flight that departed from Dublin Airport on Wednesday night.
According to the Irish Mirror newspaper, the group, comprising 21 men, nine women, and five children, arrived in Nigeria on Thursday.
Irish Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, confirmed the return, stating he was “happy to say” that all individuals reached Nigeria despite an unscheduled stopover due to a medical incident on board the flight. While the Irish government did not provide a specific reason for the deportations, Mr. O’Callaghan remarked that “Ireland has a rules-based immigration system. It is important that those rules are robust and enforced.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) indicated it was not aware of the deportation when contacted on Thursday. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, spokesperson for NiDCOM, made the statement to Punch Diaspora Tales.
