Egypt, Angola Pledge Closer Ties in Cairo Summit

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has hosted his Angolan counterpart João Lourenço in Cairo, with both leaders emphasising the importance of strengthening political, economic, and investment relations between their two nations.

President El-Sisi highlighted the historical ties between Egypt and Angola during the meeting on Tuesday. He announced the signing of several memoranda of understanding in key sectors including communications, information technology, housing, and infrastructure, which he said would contribute to enhanced cooperation in these areas.

Economic ties between the two countries are already showing signs of growth, with trade reaching $34.2 million in 2024, marking a significant 60 per cent increase.

Beyond bilateral relations, the two leaders also discussed pressing African and international issues. These included the growing challenges of water scarcity and climate change, as well as the ongoing conflicts in Sudan and the Gaza Strip.

President El-Sisi commended President Lourenço’s mediation efforts in the continuing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Both presidents underscored the necessity for a unified African stance on global challenges and called for stronger representation of the African continent within international organisations. The summit in Cairo signals a commitment from both Egypt and Angola to deepen their partnership and work together on issues of mutual concern on the African continent and beyond.
