Sixty people, including a brother of the prominent Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Reverend Father Matthew Kukah, have been rescued in Nigeria following a security operation, officials have said.
The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, received the rescued victims on Tuesday. Among them was Ishaya Kuka, the brother of Bishop Kukah, a well-known voice on social and political issues in Nigeria.
Also rescued was Adesanya Michael, the Deputy Director of the National Assembly Commission, who had been abducted from his home in Kubwa, Abuja.
The Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, handed over the group, comprising 35 men and 25 women, to the senior government officials. He stated that the victims were rescued on Sunday, April 7th, by troops from the 1st Division of the Nigerian Army in a coordinated operation supported by other security and intelligence agencies.
The location and circumstances of the kidnapping were not immediately disclosed. Kidnapping for ransom has become a significant security challenge in various parts of Nigeria in recent years.
