The FBI has revised its initial assessment, now believing that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the 42-year-old army veteran behind the deadly New Orleans attack on New Year’s Day, acted alone. Jabbar, who was killed in a shootout with police, drove a pickup truck into crowds, killing 14 people and wounding dozens more.
According to investigators, Jabbar posted videos online proclaiming his allegiance to the Islamic State group. He also planted two explosive devices in cooler boxes before the attack, which have since been removed by authorities.
Bourbon Street, the scene of the attack, has reopened to the public ahead of the college football Sugar Bowl match. The FBI has confirmed that there is “no definitive link” between the New Orleans attack and the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas.
The victims of the attack include an aspiring nurse and a father of two. Jabbar, a US citizen, was honourably discharged from the Army and had served in Afghanistan.
