Nigeria’s Telecoms Regulator Approves Disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications from MTN

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given the green light for the disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications Ltd. from MTN Nigeria’s network due to unpaid interconnect charges. Exchange Telecommunications, a local and international interconnect carrier, was notified of the application and given the opportunity to comment, but the NCC determined that the company had no sufficient reason for non-payment.

The disconnection, set to take effect five days from the notice date, will prevent MTN from passing voice and data traffic through Exchange Telecommunications. Instead, MTN will use alternative channels to interconnect with other network service providers. This disconnection will remain in place until the NCC decides otherwise.

The NCC’s decision is in line with Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators, 2012
