Nigerian Youths Key to National Defence and Development – Defence Minister

The Nigerian Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has emphasized the crucial role young people can play in driving national defence, security, and development.

The statement was signed by Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations, who noted that the Minister’s lecture was delivered to participants of Executive Course 46 at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru.

Speaking at the lecture, Mr. Badaru highlighted the importance of empowering youths through targeted government policies and programs.

He noted that with over 60% of Nigeria’s population under 25, harnessing this demographic dividend is essential. He cited examples of digital mobilization’s impact, including the Arab Spring and Nigeria’s #ENDSARS protests, and stressed the need for constructive youth engagement.

Mr. Badaru acknowledged past empowerment programs but noted their limitations. He urged strategists to ensure faithful implementation of government policies, emphasizing genuine youth empowerment as crucial for national defence and security.

He highlighted opportunities for youth empowerment and job creation in Nigeria’s digital economy, emphasizing multi-stakeholder collaboration, targeted interventions, and supportive policies.

“By investing in digital infrastructure, innovation, skill development, and entrepreneurship, Nigeria can unlock the transformative power of its youth demographic dividend and drive sustainable economic growth, ensuring a safer and more secure future for its citizens,” he said.
