US Vice President JD Vance has publicly broken with President Donald Trump over the US-led war in Iran, attributing the Republican Party’s major losses in the midterm elections directly to the military conflict.
In a 600-word post published on X on Wednesday, Vance acknowledged that conservative voters had turned away from the party, leading to Democrats taking control of both the US House of Representatives and the Senate.
“The reason we lost is the war,” Vance wrote. “The president himself said so last night.”
Vance urged those defending the intervention to acknowledge its political consequences: “If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest.”
While Vance has publicly supported the war since the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Tehran in February 2026, he had reportedly voiced private reservations inside the administration. His post marks an unprecedented public rift between a sitting president and vice-president on a core foreign policy decision.
Trump responds as Vance outlines 2028 roadmap
Despite the public dissent, President Trump reacted mildly to the comments, telling reporters he understood Vance’s stance while maintaining that the military action was necessary.
“I know how he feels about it. I think it was fine,” Trump said, adding that he would make the same decision again to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear capability. “I knew that when I went in, and we stopped them from having a nuclear weapon.”
Political analysts view the statement as an early effort by Vance to distance himself from the current administration’s foreign policy ahead of a potential 2028 presidential campaign. Daniel Byman, a foreign policy expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, noted that navigating a balance between loyalty and independence will be a key challenge for Vance moving forward.
