Abuja — Parts of southern Nigeria face scheduled power cuts on Monday and Tuesday as maintenance teams carry out upgrades to high-voltage equipment, the country’s electricity grid operator has announced.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said engineers will conduct routine maintenance on a 100-megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformer at the Irrua transmission substation on 2 and 3 November.
Work will take place between 10:00 and 17:00 local time (09:00 to 16:00 GMT) on both days. The planned shutdown will allow contractors to commission a new SERGI fire protection system on the transformer, designed to reduce the risk of industrial fires at the facility. As a result, the regional distributor, Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), will be unable to draw electricity from the grid during the work periods.Communities affected by the outage include Ehor, Uzebba, Ubiaja, Ekpoma, and Agbor.
TCN apologised for the disruption, stating that the temporary shutdown is necessary to ensure long-term grid stability and safety.Nigeria’s power network frequently undergoes maintenance and capacity upgrades as authorities work to improve reliability across its national grid.
