“Governance is about human lives”: Academic reflects on legacy of Nigeria’s former governor Ikpeazu

In an address marking the 62nd birthday of Nigeria’s ambassador to Spain, Okezie Ikpeazu, a leading medical academic has called for a reassessment of political leadership in Africa’s most populous nation, arguing that good governance must ultimately be measured by its direct impact on ordinary citizens.

Professor Kelechi Okonta, a professor of cardiothoracic surgery and member of the Governing Council at the University of Port Harcourt, delivered the tribute titled “Putting a Human Face to Governance in Nigeria: The Okezie Ikpeazu Story (2015–2023).” In his reflection, Professor Okonta noted that while Nigerian politics is frequently dominated by grand promises and infrastructure projects, true leadership lies in creating sustainable livelihoods, access to education, and social security.

Promoting local enterprise

Highlighting Ikpeazu’s two terms as governor of southeastern Abia State between 2015 and 2023, Okonta pointed to the high-profile “Made-in-Aba” campaign as a key example of human-centered policy. The initiative aimed to boost local manufacturing by promoting indigenous artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs on national and international stages. Okonta also cited state programs in basic education, healthcare, agriculture, and school feeding targeted at low-income families and vulnerable groups as attempts to bring public administration closer to grassroot communities.

Balancing legacy and challenges

Addressing the broader realities of state governance in Nigeria, Professor Okonta acknowledged that the administration faced notable hurdles, including lingering concerns over unpaid public sector salaries, pension backlogs, and infrastructure deficits. He emphasized that evaluating any political tenure requires looking at both the intentions and the structural challenges that affect long-term delivery.”Behind every government policy is a human life, behind every economic decision is a family, and behind every development project is a community hoping for a better tomorrow,” Okonta stated, describing this human-centric framework as essential for analyzing Ikpeazu’s legacy.
