Power fully restored in parts of Abuja after substation maintenance

ABUJA — Power supply has been fully restored to several districts in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory following routine maintenance work at a major transmission substation, the national grid operator has announced.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that engineers successfully completed annual preventive maintenance on a key 60MVA transformer at the Gwagwalada Transmission Substation on Saturday afternoon. The unit was temporarily taken offline shortly after midday to allow technical crews to service the transformer and its primary equipment.

According to TCN, electricity supply was interrupted for just 20 minutes in total—a brief 10-minute outage before the work began, followed by another 10-minute pause after its completion—to allow for safe switching operations. Power was completely restored at 4:54 p.m. local time.

The brief outage temporarily affected several residential areas, towns, and institutions south-west of the capital city, including Kuje, Kwali, Giri, Pegi, and the University of Abuja campus.

In a statement, the grid management thanked electricity consumers in the affected communities for their patience and cooperation during the scheduled maintenance.
