Kano grid upgrade: Power authorities plan temporary outage

KANO, NIGERIA — Power authorities in northern Nigeria are coordinating a temporary power outage and load diversion to allow for vital infrastructure upgrades on the main transmission line serving Kano State.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) brought together key industry stakeholders—including the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), local contractors, and the Kano State Ministry of Works—to plan work on the Kumbotso–Dan Agundi 132kV transmission line. The project involves elevating Towers 27 and 28 along the line to improve network resilience and safety.

Chairing the meeting in Kano, TCN General Manager Engr. M. K. Bello highlighted the necessity of rigorous safety checks prior to execution. While expressing confidence in the engineering teams, Bello urged contractors to thoroughly evaluate all proposed electrical connections and switching arrangements to prevent service disruptions and guarantee worker safety.

Representatives from the grid operator emphasized that strict protocol must be maintained. NISO Regional Operations Coordinator Kunle Egbedinni reiterated that all planned outage applications must be submitted at least 14 days in advance to comply with national Grid Code regulations.

To minimize the impact on consumers, KEDCO’s Head of Operations and Maintenance, Sabiu Haruna, proposed diverting electrical loads from the Dan Agundi substation to alternative regional facilities—including Dakata, Tamburawa, Rimin Zakara, Kumbotso, and Wudil—during a proposed two-day maintenance window.

Engineers reviewing regional network capacities noted that some facilities, such as the Hadejia substation, would be unable to absorb their full assigned 60-megawatt share, requiring further adjustments across the Dakata, Tamburawa, and Rimin Zakara networks.

Stakeholders concluded the session by agreeing to streamline inter-agency cooperation, adhere strictly to technical timelines, and prioritize grid stability throughout the maintenance period.
